About Us
Kebari for Tenkara Anglers by a Tenkara Angler

The Tyer
Jay Guarneri has been tying flies since he was 13. In the 2010’s, Jay fell in love with the tenkara style of Japanese fly fishing. That passion has guided the development of his personal tying style ever since. He has contributed articles to Tenkara Angler and remains active in the tenkara community.
In 2025, Jay started Jay’s Kebari Shop to provide high quality flies to tenkara anglers. In particular, he wanted to address the availability of less common styles such as futsu and giant kebari. Jay continues to hone his craft and is always looking for ways to improve the design and construction of his flies.
The Flies
I produce my flies in small batches with an eye towards durability, consistency, and simplicity. Each pattern is designed from a functionality first standpoint. This allows each kebari to address a certain goal or situation. I then refine each design to help inspire confidence on the water.
While there will be some minor variation due to the intentionally scruffy nature of my flies, I will never send out flies that I wouldn’t be confident to fish myself. Any fly that is too far out of spec or that I am not confident in is scraped back to a bare hook to start again.

Sustainability
Our world is too full of single-use plastics. I do my best to slow this down by packing all orders in eco-friendly paper crush-proof boxes and fully recyclable paper mailers. It costs me a little more than the plastic alternatives, but it’s the right thing to do. And it looks great, too!
I also limit the synthetic materials used in my flies. I do use synthetic threads, and small amounts of synthetic dubbings in blends where it serves a genuine functional purpose. I do not tie with foam, craft fur, UV cure resins, or lead.
